It is feasible to find a pre-1908 Winchester by using a proof over the receiver, but very little in basic sight about the barrel. In that state of affairs, I'd 1st check the serial selection for an R&R, and pull the forend to check the bottom in the barrel.

I can not determine precisely when the “Oval P” was to start with used based on my get the job done but I can make this observation. On the best of my information, should you find a pre-1905 Winchester having a “WP” evidence to the barrel, but not over the receiver, any person other than Winchester swapped the barrel.
